Where a seller is based changes the final price. Etsy adds 10% GST at checkout on items sent from overseas sellers when the order is $1,000 or less. Local sellers already include GST in their listed prices, so nothing extra is added. An overseas listing that looks cheaper can end up costing the same or more once GST and international postage are counted.

Etsy’s Purchase Protection programme is a real safety net when you buy from small sellers, and it can stop you losing money on an order that goes wrong. For qualifying orders, Etsy will give you a full refund if your item never arrives, arrives damaged, turns up 7 or more days after the maximum estimated delivery date shown at checkout, or differs significantly from the listing description or photos, such as the wrong material or colour.
Getting your money back is straightforward when you follow the steps in order.
Start by signing in, going to Purchases and reviews and selecting “Help with order” next to the order, so the seller has a chance to fix the problem first.
If it is still unresolved 48 hours after your help request, and the estimated delivery date has passed, you can select “Open a case” so Etsy steps in.
You have until 30 days after your order’s estimated delivery date to open a case, so do not let a problem sit.
If you checked out as a guest, open your order receipt email from transaction@etsy.com, select View your order and sign in or create an account, because you need an account to open a case and this cannot be done in the app.
If you dispute the charge with your bank, card provider or PayPal, Etsy closes the case and you cannot open a new one, so pick one route and stick with it. Late deliveries caused by events outside the seller’s control, such as a carrier strike or severe weather, do not qualify either. Photograph a parcel and its contents as soon as you open it, since clear evidence makes a case quicker to review. If you are offered a refund as Etsy credit, it appears in your balance straight away once approved, which is handy if you plan to reorder from another shop anyway.
Because every shop sets its own prices, Etsy does not run one store wide sale. Instead, it holds sales events that sellers choose to join, and the biggest falls in late November and early December, timed around the Friday Sale and Cyber Monday. The rest of the year follows a fairly predictable rhythm.

When the sales arrive, you will know straight away whether a discount is genuine, because Etsy does not allow sellers to raise a price just to drop it for a sale. If you favourite an item, the seller can have Etsy email you a discount on it, and that offer lasts 60 days.
If you leave an item in your basket for more than 2 hours, you may receive an abandoned basket offer that also lasts 60 days.
Some shops send an interested shopper offer after you view their listings, but it expires after just 7 days.
Many shops send a thank you offer after you order, which you can use on your next purchase from them for up to a year.
Some sellers bundle items that pair well together at a lower price, which is shown on the listing page.
These offers only reach shoppers who receive Etsy marketing emails, so go to Your account, select Account settings and check your subscriptions on the Emails tab before you start favouriting. Bundle discounts do not stack with other shop promotions, and only one targeted offer can be used at a time, so compare the options and pick the biggest saving.
Etsy has no points or membership scheme you can join in Australia, so these shop offers are the closest thing to a loyalty reward. Keeping reorders of things like candles, prints or gifts with the same few shops you trust means each order can unlock a thank you discount on the next one.
If you shop on Etsy regularly, the app is worth installing because it gathers sellers’ deals on things you love in one place. Its Deals feed shows when a shop you have favourited is running a sale or promotion, or when an item you have favourited drops in price, and it also suggests deals from similar shops, which is a quick way to compare prices on similar pieces. The Updates tab in your Favourites adds new items from favourited shops, plus alerts when a favourite is back in stock or almost sold out.
Favourite generously as you browse, because the Deals feed only works as well as your favourites list. The more shops and items you save, the more price drops you catch without going looking. When an item you want is almost sold out, weigh up whether waiting for a sale is worth the risk of missing it, especially for one of a kind vintage pieces.
Etsy does have a “Make an Offer” button, but most shoppers browsing in AUD will not see it. Etsy’s help centre says the tool is currently only available to sellers and buyers who have their currency set to USD, and each seller decides which listings accept offers.
That does not rule out negotiating. If a shop is not running a sale or sharing an Etsy discount code, message the seller through Etsy and politely ask whether they would consider a discount. Sellers are more open to it when you are buying several items from the same shop, ordering a higher priced piece, or asking about an item that has been listed for a while. For the effort of a quick message, you could end up with a great deal.
Switching your browsing currency to USD shows the button where sellers allow it, but the costs add up. You would pay in US dollars, so most Australian cards add a foreign transaction fee. At a 3% fee, for example, that is an extra $3 on every $100 you spend, which can cancel out a modest accepted offer. Coupons Etsy issued to you in AUD will not apply either, and a successful offer cannot be combined with a shop sale apart from free delivery. If a seller accepts, you have 48 hours to complete the purchase and the item is not held for you in the meantime. For most purchases, a friendly message in AUD is the simpler option.
Select Show filters after you search and choose the sale option under Special offers to see only items sellers have currently marked down. It saves you scrolling through full priced products and takes you straight to the deals. In our experience, markdowns range from around 10% to as much as 70% off, depending on the shop.
Many sellers run these promotions for a limited time, so if something catches your eye, check the listing to see when the sale ends. Pair the sale filter with a price range and Australia under Shop location, then sort by price, and you will see discounted pieces within your budget from local shops, which often means quicker, cheaper delivery and no GST added at checkout. If you also hold an Etsy code from our page or your inbox, a marked down listing is the natural place to spend it, as long as the code’s conditions allow it.
Etsy sells digital gift cards in AUD, and they expire 48 months from purchase, with the date shown in the confirmation email. They make a handy present for someone who loves handmade, but a few rules decide how far a balance goes. Only shops that accept credit cards through Etsy take gift cards and Etsy credit, so look for “This shop accepts Etsy gift cards” on the listing before you fill your basket. If your balance does not cover the whole order, you can pay the rest by card or PayPal, though not with Apple Pay or Google Pay. You can still use an Etsy coupon when paying with a gift card balance, so the two savings add up.
Klarna instalments are also available on eligible orders, which spreads the cost but does not reduce it. Treat Klarna as a budgeting tool rather than a discount, and only use it when you would buy the item anyway and can meet every payment. A gift card balance, on the other hand, stretches furthest when it is saved for a shop sale.
