To qualify, each destination had to be within an eight-hour direct flight of Australia’s busiest airports, and unlike other travel reports, our index takes into account twenty-three different metrics that matter to modern Australian travellers - namely affordability, the must-see attractions, local food and regional specialities, safety, sustainability, trendiness, weather, and last-minute accessibility.

Using data from globally trusted sources like TripAdvisor, Numbeo, Smarttraveller, and Statista, alongside insights from flight tools, we’ve created a detailed picture of each place. Whether your focus is on budget, eco-conscious adventures, or spontaneity, our list is the go-to guide that every backpacker needs, and wants, to plan their next trip.

Backpacking is a fine balance between once in a lifetime adventure and budget-conscious exploration. To ensure that the list prioritises the things that are important to enjoy both, and everything in between, we’ve looked long and hard at a lot of different factors but ensured that affordability of accommodation, cost of living, outdoor activities, experiences, and the locations that are trending on social media, most notably Instagram, were at the top of our list.

1. Manila, Philippines - The Ultimate Backpacking Paradise

Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, where modern skyscrapers meet historical landmarks, is known for its warm hospitality, iconic attractions like Intramuros, and the nightlife that helped to put Makati on the map. Captivating visitors with its dynamic urban energy, Manila is the only place where you can savour famous adobo or pancit dishes and submerge yourself in the city's blend of old-world charm and contemporary life at the same time.

Why does Manila top our list? The simplest answer is that it’s a standout performer that has the third-lowest flight cost of around $1,345 for a seven-and-a-half hour flight, a tropical annual average temperature of 28°C that places it second for climate and its public transport system is highly affordable, at around $0.92 per trip. And as you don’t need a visa, it makes travelling there incredibly easy and hassle-free.

Ensuring that you visit at the right time is also important, so if you’re looking to make the most of reliable weather that hits a high of 31°C, and doesn’t usually dip below 24°C, then we’d recommend visiting between January and May, which is the dry season in Manila. And as it’s the dry season, the chances of rain stopping play are much lower than they are for the rest of the year.

2. Nadi, Fiji - Your Gateway to Tropical Bliss

Nadi, the crown jewel of Fiji’s main island, is a tropical paradise renowned for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, is home to both the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple and Namaka Market, and nearby Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands are a haven for water sports enthusiasts and island hoppers, while the Garden of the Sleeping Giant offers the lush greenery and tranquillity that beckons nature lovers with open arms.

Nadi claimed its place on our list as it came in first for outdoor activities and eco-conscious tours per capita with thirty-four outdoor activities and nineteen eco-conscious tours, which given its small size, was an impressive feat. With a flight time of four and a half hours from most major Australian cities, minimal rainy days—around 103 per year—and abundant sunshine, averaging 2,480 hours annually, Nadi is a haven for the curious and those who just want to kick back and relax alike.

And for those who like to plan, the best time to hit the beaches in Fiji is between June and September when it’s less humid, less rain, and with avg—temperatures ranging from low to mid-thirties. However, while the weather is incredible during those months, as the schools are out in Australia and New Zealand, families tend to venture there during that time, making it more crowded and pushing the accommodation price up.

3. Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia - A Backpacker's Dream Destination

Denpasar, the capital of Bali, is a city pulsing with life, that invites you to wander through its markets, discover its artistic heritage, and soak up the sun on its world-famous beaches, whether you're seeking the serenity of its numerous temples or the buzz of local bazaars, it unveils jaw-dropping secrets and magic at every twist and turn.

Coming in at third place, its extraordinary mixture of affordability, and adventure, and the fact that it’s the second-cheapest city to fly into after Wellington, with direct flights from six Australian airports: Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Cairns, Melbourne, and Adelaide, make it a favourite with backpackers and casual thrill seekers.

For budget travellers, Denpasar is a paradise as it offers the lowest average meal price (about $2.90) and as accommodation costs around $44 per person per night, it crosses the finish line on our list in second for any traveller with one eye on their wallet. It also takes the silver medal for tourists who love to spend their days playing in the sun, with seven hundred and fifty-six outdoor activities, sixty-eight eco-conscious tours on TripAdvisor, and an impressive 2,990 hours of sunshine hours annually, Denpasar is as bright as it is inviting.

However, it’s also worth noting that Bali has two distinct seasons, wet (October through March) and dry (April to September). That said, you can expect nice and hot temperatures

4. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: A Melting Pot of Culture and Adventure

There’s no city quite like Kuala Lumpur, with its dazzling skyline dominated by the iconic Petronas Towers, bustling street markets filled with tantalising aromas, and a cultural tapestry woven from Malay, and Chinese, it’s an unmissable destination.

Humidity is a factor in Malaysia, and temperatures in Kuala Lumpur can reach 35°C thanks to the heat that the city retains during the hottest months, but if you’re planning to travel there, we’d recommend doing so in either July or August when it’s less likely to rain, and temperatures are usually around 28°C.

5. Christchurch, New Zealand: Nature’s Gateway to Adventure

Christchurch also excels in cleanliness and water quality, earning one of the lowest pollution scores on our list. This score also takes into account factors like garbage disposal, noise, and light pollution, and the volume of green spaces, and thanks to its minimal rainfall—about 82 days per year—Christchurch is a quintessential refuge for nature devotees.

6. Singapore: A City of Contrasts and Convenience

Singapore is where tradition and modernity come together in perfect harmony. From vibrant hawker centres serving world-class street food to serene gardens and cultural enclaves like Little India and Chinatown, the city offers an experience as diverse as it is captivating.

Singapore is the safest, and most stress-free destination on our list, thanks to it having the second-best drinking water quality and the lowest crime score the latter of which takes into account the general perception of crime, feelings of safety during day and night, concerns about specific incidents like theft or harassment, and the prevalence of both property-related and violent offences.

With direct flights available from four major Australian airports—Sydney, Perth, Cairns, and Adelaide, accommodation that averages $115 per night per person, a wealth of free attractions—about 440 listed on TripAdvisor—and a highly efficient, affordable public transport system, low pollution (it comes in at fourth on our guide, clean water, a tropical climate that averages 82°F year-round, ensures comfort, Singapore offers a unique blend of safety, culture, and convenience, that makes it a must-visit city for any, and every, serious backpacker.

It’s also worth noting that if you want to avoid the possibility of encountering monsoon winds and the smoke which can drift in thanks to its neighbour Indonesia’s burning season, the best time to visit Singapore is between October and April when it’s still warm and welcoming, and the air is clean and easy to breathe.

7. Jakarta, Indonesia: A Historical Gateway to Indonesia

A former bastion of colonial trade with a varied and rich past, Jakarta’s streets are brimming with life and energy, inviting travellers to sample the centuries of cultural evolution the city was built on. Public transport costs here are among the lowest on our list, at just $0.34 per trip and accommodation is equally affordable, with an average cost of $45 per night per person. The city is also a boon for food lovers, as it’s a paradise filled with authentic flavours, and as meals can cost as little as $3.87, it’s all too easy to indulge in every conceivable, and sometimes inconceivable, Indonesian culinary delight.

That intoxicating combination is probably one of the reasons why the number of hashtags giving it the thumbs up on social media has risen by one and a half percent during the last twelve months, which singles it out as one of the more desirable destinations for fashion-conscious travellers and trend-obsessed backpackers.

And with an average annual temperature of 26°C and an impressive 2,975 hours of sunshine annually, it’s the perfect year-round getaway. That said, if you’re planning on going between November and April, as it’s monsoon season, the weather is likely to be unpredictable at best so whether you’re drawn to its historical landmarks, vibrant culture, or unbeatable affordability, Jakarta is a city that lingers long in the memory of all who visit it.

If you’re looking to make the most of your visit to Jakarta, then the dry season (between June and September) is the best time to explore the city, as it's far less humid and as the name of the season suggests, there’s much less chance of rain spoiling every possible opportunity to explore the city.

8. Wellington, New Zealand: The Cool Capital of Food and Nature

Wellington may be small in size, but thanks to its eclectic arts scene, intimate coffee spots, and a food culture that punches above its weight, it’s big on charm. Nestled between rolling hills and a breathtaking harbour, Wellington is overflowing with things, like the Te Papa Museum and Mount Victoria that offer panoramic views that will leave a lifelong impression on anyone lucky enough to experience them, and its waterfront provides tourists with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the everyday minutiae of life while being blown away by its devastating beauty.

Wellington takes centre stage on our list thanks to its adherence to sustainability and outstanding quality of life and boasts the best water quality and lowest pollution levels among all the destinations on our list, which highlights its continuing dedication to maintaining its pristine environment.

The one hundred and ten dining options listed on TripAdvisor, make Wellington a surprising must-do city for foodies on a budget. With a flight time of just over three hours from three major Australian airports, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, Wellington is an easy-to-reach home away from home.

Topping the charts for free attractions, with around one hundred listed on TripAdvisor, Wellington offers plenty of activities for every kind of traveller, and while accommodation averages $77.45 per night per person, which is higher than some of the other destinations on our list, the abundance of free and budget-friendly experiences more than makes up for it, especially when you take into account New Zealand’s relatively high living costs.

And, if you’re one of the slightly rarer breed of backpackers who likes a slightly colder climate, as Wellington is the second coolest on our list, it might just be the ideal place for you. Bearing that in mind, if you do want to make the most of everything that Wellington has to offer, we’d advise travelling there at the tail end of Summer between March and May when most of the other tourists have packed up and gone home, and it’s still warm enough to enjoy the aforementioned one hundred TripAdvisor endorsed activities.

9. Bangkok, Thailand: The Backpacker’s Capital of Southeast Asia

Bangkok is more than just a city, it’s a sensory overload of flavours, sights, and sounds that’s renowned for its street food, bustling markets, and majestic golden temples that offer an immersive experience for every traveller and whether you’re wandering the glittering halls of the Grand Palace or relaxing and enjoying a bowl of the city’s signature Pad Thai, it’s a place that isn’t easy to forget.

This might explain why it’s become one of the trendiest cities to travel to; it’s been buoyed by an eye-watering eleven percent increase in hashtags globally in the last year, which makes it a mecca for any traveller with an interest in visiting, and being seen in, some the coolest places on the planet.

Bangkok’s climate is an additional draw for sunseekers and anyone looking to escape the Winter blues, as its average temperature of 29°C and 2,625 hours of sunshine ensures that Bangkok offers a backpacking experience unlike any other.

With the second-lowest average flight costs on our list, when adjusted for the six and half hours it takes to get there, Bangkok averages about $1,355 per flight, making it an easy choice for Australian travellers and as it costs in the vicinity of $51.63 per night per person and meals aren’t much more than $5.19, it isn’t a city that will trouble your bank balance.

1. Selection of Countries: The countries included in the research are the top 20 destinations visited by Australians, based on Statista’s report on outbound tourism for the financial year 2023.
2. Selection of Cities: For each of the top 20 countries, the three largest cities by population were identified using World Population Review. Only cities within an 8.5-hour flight radius of Australia’s major international airports with direct flight availability were included. Cities from countries that did not meet these criteria were excluded.
3. Criteria for Destination Inclusion: Australian airports considered in this analysis were selected based on passenger movement data from Statista for 2023 and must have:
• International departures.
• Direct flights to at least one of the selected destinations.
4. Population and Area Data: Population estimates were sourced from World Population Review to calculate metrics such as per capita values.
5. Data Collection and Weighting: Data for each city was collected across 23 metrics from various sources (listed below). Metrics were grouped into categories such as affordability, accessibility, sustainability, and trendiness.
• For metrics with multiple data points, such as flight costs from multiple airports, an average was calculated.
• Cities were scored on each metric and ranked from 1 (best) to 13 (worst), with the final score being a weighted average of the rankings. Metrics critical to backpacking, such as affordability (accommodation and flight costs), were given higher weights.
6. Trendiness Calculation: Trendiness was determined using Keywordtool. The top 10 Instagram hashtags for each city were analysed for relevancy and popularity. Irrelevant hashtags were excluded. The trend factor was calculated as the average percentage change in hashtag usage over the past 12 months, indicating a city’s popularity growth on social media.
7. Final Scoring and Ranking: The overall score for each destination was calculated using weighted averages of the rankings across all metrics. The methodology prioritises metrics most relevant to backpackers, such as the cost of accommodation, free attractions, and social media trendiness.
