Most nbn plans open with an introductory rate for the first six invoices, then move to the standard list price in the plan's Critical Information Summary. The discount is credited on each invoice, with no rebate to claim.

• A Superloop promo code or sign up offer is for new residential customers and can be used once per customer and premises.

• Former customers who had a six month discount must wait 12 months for another introductory offer, so leaving and rejoining won't reset it.

• A $1 payment verification charge may be taken at sign up and is credited back on your first invoice.

• Addresses in new developments can attract a one off $300 New Development Fee on the first bill, which can wipe out much of the intro saving.

The ongoing price is what you pay for most of the year, so the 12 month total (six months at the intro rate plus six at the list price) is the figure that shows a plan's real cost.

Credits add up per referral and can take your bill to zero, but never beyond your monthly plan charge. If a friend cancels within the six months, your bill is adjusted from the next invoice, although a new referral can make up the shortfall.

Stagger referrals rather than bunching them. Three friends joining in the same month all stop earning in the same month, while spacing them out keeps a credit on your bill for longer.

My Speed Boost lifts your connection to almost double its usual speed for up to 24 hours. Switch it on in SuperHub or the Superloop app, or schedule it, such as for the night a big game update lands.

• Extra Value (50/20), Family Max (500/50), Megaspeed (750/50) and other eligible plans get five free Speed Upgrade Days each billing month.

• Unused free days roll into your My Speed Boost Bank, which holds up to 30 days.

• Extra days cost $2 each and are only used once your banked days run out.

• Family (100/20), 250/100, Lightspeed and Hyperspeed plans get no days at all, Everyday (25/10) can only buy days at $2, and on FTTN only the 50/20 plan earns free days.

A Family Max customer who boosts to 1000/100 for the odd heavy download weekend gets gigabit speed when it counts without paying for a gigabit plan all year. Dropping to Everyday wipes out any banked days.

The Superloop app lets you pay and track bills, watch mobile data usage, schedule Speed Upgrade Days, change plans and buy add ons without calling anyone.

Refreshify runs a health check on your internet service, tracks outages and suggests fixes, so you can often sort out a dropout yourself. Its outage record also helps if you later raise the problem with support.

The usage tracker is the real money saver. If your mobile Data Bank keeps growing month after month, your plan is bigger than you need.

Superloop's SIM only mobile plans are prepaid on a 30 day auto recharge cycle with no lock-in, and plan changes in SuperHub usually go through within about 15 minutes.

A home phone is added to an nbn plan with no line fee and free number porting, which can take 10 to 15 business days. On FTTN, FTTB or FTTC, port your number before the new broadband activates or it's lost, and the service generally won't work in a power outage.

At 20c a minute, 50 minutes of mobile calls costs the same $10 as the pack, so a landline used for a few short local calls is usually cheaper on pay as you go. Only the call pack counts towards Bundle & Save, which tips the balance for heavier callers.

Introductory offers usually can't be combined with other promotions, so a sale rate replaces a Superloop coupon rather than adding to it. If you already want a faster tier, the Super Speed Sale is usually the one worth waiting for.

PriceLock costs a one off $25 and locks your plan's list price for two years. It doesn't freeze the introductory rate, but it protects the ongoing price that follows the first six months.

That $25 is just over $1 a month across 24 months, so one price rise of a few dollars a month more than covers it. A Superloop promo code only lowers the first six months, while PriceLock guards the price after that, which makes it most useful if you plan to stay well beyond the intro period.

Switching plans on a no lock-in plan is free but limited to once a month. If you joined with a Superloop discount code, moving up a tier during the intro period carries the remaining discount months across, while moving down removes the discount and puts you straight on the list price. FTTN and FTTB lines may not support tiers above nbn 50.

Judge plans on typical evening speed (7pm to 11pm) rather than maximum speed, and start on the lowest tier you're confident will work. Upgrading later keeps your discount, while starting too high and stepping down loses it.
