Europcar's free Privilege For You program is the one discount most renters can use every time. Members get 10% off public rates on the daily rental price, with no minimum rental length and no car category limit, and it applies to prepaid and pay at desk bookings alike. It doesn't cover extras or protection add-ons, and it doesn't apply when you book with negotiated prices.

Points build your status, and each level adds more value.

• Discoverers (0 to 999 points) get the 10% member rate, member offers and up to 15% off at participating Accor hotels.

• Travellers (1,000 to 2,999 points) also earn 10% more points on every rental.

• Adventurers (3,000 to 9,999 points) earn 20% more points and get a one category upgrade when available, a free additional driver and priority service at the desk.

• Navigators (10,000 points and above) earn 30% more points and get a two category upgrade when available.

Under the program terms you earn 1 point per euro spent, converted at the European Central Bank rate, so an Australian dollar earns less than a full point. Bonus points close the gap, with 100 welcome points, 50 for each online check-in, 50 for each eligible extra booked online, 150 for renting an electric vehicle and 50 on your birthday.

Points can't be spent directly. Instead, crossing thresholds such as 300, 500 and 800 points earns a surprise reward, like a value off coupon that works like a Europcar voucher on a future booking, a free additional driver, free Roadside Assistance Plus or 25% off a child seat. Each reward must be booked online within 90 days, and only one can be used per booking. Upgrades are limited to rentals of 14 days or less booked at least 48 hours ahead, and they exclude vans, trucks and premium cars.

New members get there fastest with an EV. If you were going to hire anyway, choosing an EV and checking in online adds 200 bonus points to your 100 welcome points, which reaches the first 300 point reward after a single rental.

Joining takes a few minutes. Open the Menu at the top right of Europcar's website, choose Privilege For You, then select Join for free and complete your details. Your welcome email confirms your membership along with your 100 welcome points. Opting in to marketing emails is worth it here, because member-only offers are sent by email or shown on the website and app.

Always log in before you search, as the member rate and any rewards you've earned only appear in the booking journey when you are signed in. If you join after booking, you still earn points on that rental as long as you register before it ends.

Elite status with another rental company can fast-track you. The way each program pays decides which one suits your trip. Flat per-rental miles favour short hires, while Velocity's per-dollar rate grows with the length of the rental, so a weekend away often suits Skywards or KrisFlyer, and a two week road trip usually earns more through Velocity.

If you need a car for a month or more, the myEuropcar subscription swaps daily rates for one fixed monthly price. You choose a minimum term of 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and the longer the term, the lower the fixed monthly rate. The price bundles a basic protection package, maintenance, registration, a monthly kilometre allowance and 24/7 roadside assistance, with no starting fee. Once the minimum term is up, the subscription rolls on month to month until you end it with 14 working days' notice by email.

Pick your kilometre package carefully at booking, because it can't be changed during the subscription term. Unused kilometres expire at the end of each month and don't carry over, and every kilometre beyond your package costs $0.30, so going 200km over in a month adds $60. A package that matches your real driving beats the biggest one. Subscribers must be 21 or older, and drivers aged 21 to 24 pay a young driver fee.

The trade-off is loyalty value. Subscriptions don't earn Privilege For You points, and member benefits and rewards can't be used on them, so for a stay of only just over a month, a standard rental at the member rate can come out ahead once points and rewards are counted.

Drivers must be at least 21, and a Young Driver Surcharge applies to drivers under 25 and to some vehicles. It's added at the extras step, and the 10% Privilege For You member rate only reduces the daily rental price, not that fee.

If the student or younger traveller in your group doesn't need to drive, booking under a main driver aged 25 or over keeps the surcharge off the bill entirely.
