The Happy Hour sale runs over a short evening window, when selected one-way and return flights drop in price until they sell out. Only Economy Lite and Choice fares are included, travel dates are limited, and there's no Virgin Australia coupon to hunt for since the sale price shows straight in the search.

Lite fares look cheapest, but they leave out checked bags and seat selection and can't be cancelled. If you'll need a bag, add the cost of a prepaid bag to the Lite fare and set it against the sale's Choice fare, which already includes a 23kg bag and a seat.

Credit sits in your Travel Bank. It works on any fare on Virgin Australia operated flights, can also pay for Economy X and extra bags, and each credit carries its own expiry date.

Flex pays for itself on work trips or bookings made months ahead, where the odds of a change are highest.

Domestic checked bags bought online or through the Guest Contact Centre before check-in cost much less than the same bag bought at the airport, where prices start well above the online range. You can add up to two extra bags this way.

Bags on connecting flights run by other airlines can only be bought at the airport, so budget for that on partner trips. On a Lite fare, add the bag as soon as you know you'll need it.

Pay with Points covers onboard food and drink, WiFi passes, DiDi rides in Australia and Dymocks purchases with Velocity Points. Link an Australian-issued Visa credit or debit card in the Velocity app, pay as normal, then confirm within 7 days of the transaction being processed.

The redemption rate isn't published and can change, so we'd keep this for small balances that won't reach a Reward Seat.
