Students, teachers and education staff get member pricing at the HP Education Store. Choose it from the member programs on the Australian homepage or footer, then sign in or register with a school or university email ending in @edu.au or @edu. The team is on 1300 725 017.

A discount code can't be used there, so the member price is your whole saving. Big sales can bring public prices close to it, so the store pays off most on models that aren't on sale.

If your child's school runs a Bring Your Own Device program, its code logs you in to the HP Student BYOD Store, which only lists devices meeting the school's minimum specifications. You won't buy an underpowered laptop or pay for power the year level doesn't need. There's a built-in school checker, and the BYOD team is on 1300 798 134 or byod.edu@hp.com.

Student devices include 12 to 36 months of onsite technical support, plus optional accidental damage protection with a zero dollar claim excess. On a laptop carried to school daily, one repair outside warranty can cost more than a small discount saves.

An HP coupon code can't be added, and the gap to public pricing often narrows in big sales, so the member price does most of its work in the weeks between them.

HP Advantage for Small Business is free for start ups and small to medium businesses, and you register with your ABN.

• Members get up to 25% off public prices on business hardware, and bulk quotes from the small business team on 1800 891 209 or smb.sales@hp.com can go lower.

• New members get a one time $100 HP promo code, once per customer, on a $999 minimum spend on business PCs such as ProBook, EliteBook, ProDesk, EliteDesk, ProOne, EliteOne, ZBook and Z Desktop. It won't combine with another code.

• Membership includes a dedicated account manager, and approved businesses can lease or use a 30 day credit account.

• The Advantage store advertises a 30 day change of mind window for small business buyers.

The $100 code is worth about 10% on a $999 order but 4% on an example $2,500 one, so it works hardest just over the minimum. For an office refresh, business pricing, payment terms and the longer return window usually beat a one off EOFY bundle.

Delivery is free over $50 and a flat $7.95 below that, plus a surcharge for remote or less accessible areas.

• Estimates are 1 to 2 business days for metro, 2 to 3 for suburban and 2 to 8 for remote or offshore addresses.

• Marked items ordered before 12pm can arrive next business day in selected areas, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide metro and the ACT.

• Orders can't go to PO Boxes or parcel lockers, so use a street or work address.

On an example $45 accessory or ink order, $7.95 adds almost 18%, so a $6 item you'd buy anyway clears $50 and costs you less.

You can cancel for a full refund before an order ships, or within 14 days of receiving the complete order.

• Customised PCs and opened printer supplies aren't covered.

• Back to School deals usually run in January and February on student laptops and Chromebooks.

• EOFY sales in May and June suit business laptops, desktops and workstations bought before tax time.

• HP joins the Frenzy Sale, which typically falls in May and November.

• The Friday Sale and Cyber Monday in late November bring the biggest run of laptop, gaming PC and monitor deals, often with early deals from October.

• Boxing Day sales follow in late December.

Note your model's price a few weeks out to spot a real markdown. Sale pricing can't be stacked with an HP discount code, so the code on full price only wins when the markdown is smaller than its percentage.

Add & Save discounts regularly apply automatically at checkout, no code needed, when certain items are bought together. Offers have covered accessories, monitors, selected printers and onsite support Care Packs bought with a laptop or desktop, plus a printer and genuine HP ink in the same transaction. Deals change and run while stock lasts.

Monitors, Care Packs, printers and ink don't count towards the accessory offer, and the printer and ink offer can't be used with an HP coupon code. Return one bundled item and its discount comes off your refund. If you'll need a mouse, dock or monitor soon, adding it to the PC order usually beats buying it later.

If an HP pre-order's list price drops before it ships, you get the lower list price, even though you've paid at checkout. That takes most of the risk out of buying a launch model early.

Pre-orders can only be cancelled before shipping, with a cancellation fee, and once delivered can't be returned without the retailer's agreement. Only pre-order when you're sure of the model and specs.

HP's Clearance Deals section, under the Sale menu, prices older home, gaming and business PCs to sell while stocks last, including previous generation business laptops and desktops.

A previous generation processor rarely matters for office work, study or streaming. Stock moves quickly and Price Match doesn't cover other retailers' clearance prices, so if a clearance model suits you, buy it rather than wait for a further drop.
